The Cave Man of Laos - Vang Vieng, Laos 2023
During my travels through Southeast Asia, I had the unique opportunity to get a limestone cave tour from a local. This encounter took place in Vang Vieng, a picturesque town in Laos, renowned for its stunning limestone karsts and serene river. The sunsets were incredible and the alcohol was extremely cheap.
The story begins with a recommendation from a fellow traveler at the hostel. Intrigued by tales of a man who offered guided tours of the surrounding natural beauty, I decided to seek him out. Vang Vieng, with its lush landscapes and adventurous vibe, seemed the perfect backdrop for such an unusual meeting.
After a morning of exploring the vibrant town, we told the local taxi pickup truck where we wanted to go and set off with some friends I had met traveling. As we ventured away from the city center, the roads became rougher, eventually leading us to a small path with a sketchy bridge crossing. We parked and proceeded on foot, the sounds of the town fading into the background, replaced by the symphony of nature.
As we approached a gazebo, we were greeted by a small, wiry man with a broad smile and a twinkle in his eye. He welcomed us warmly, giving us headlamps and gesturing for us to follow him into the forest leading up to an unstable staircase that descended into the cave.
Over the next few minutes, the man led us on an unforgettable tour of the cave and the surrounding area. The nimble man, barefoot, climbed into the cave, warning us of how slippery it was and guiding us through its immense, damp, and dark interior. After a few hundred meters, he pointed to a Buddha statue nestled within the cave.
This tour was a highlight of my travels.
